Restorative yoga, mindful breathing, guided meditation and gentle movement will fill the St. Regis Recreation Center on Wednesday, April 22, as Akwesasne’s Health Promotion & Prevention team prepares Relax & Restore: A Stress Awareness Event. The two-hour session, set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., is open to all Akwesasne community members and requires registration, with Krista Lee Oakes and Robyn Leroux handling sign-ups.

The evening is built as an active practice session, not a sit-and-watch program. No yoga experience is needed, mats will be provided if needed, and no drop-offs will be allowed, which makes the event feel designed for families, neighbors and anyone who wants a gentler first step into meditation and self-regulation.

The first 20 people to register will receive a wellness bag, and every participant will be entered into a prize draw. Light healthy snacks, infused fruit, herbal water and a tea station will be part of the setup, giving the program a social rhythm that pairs movement with nourishment and makes the whole thing feel more welcoming than a typical class.

That approach fits Akwesasne’s broader wellness model. The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne says its Department of Health works with Akwesasronon to provide high-quality health services that respect culture, traditions and individuality, while Community Health Services describes Health Promotion & Prevention as a prevention-focused, community-centered program. Mental Health & Wellness Services says Akwesasne uses a wholistic, culturally safe, two-lens model of care that blends traditional healing with modern therapies, and lists mind-body practices including meditation, massage and acupuncture.

The April 2026 Community Health Newsletter also highlights stress awareness and mental health, even as the annual spring burn ban runs from March 16 to May 14, 2026. In that context, the timing of Relax & Restore looks purposeful: a family-friendly pause that gives people a place to breathe, move and reset in the middle of a busy season.

MCA Health Promotion & Prevention and Iakwa’shatste Youth Fitness have already teamed up on family ice fishing day on February 16, 2026, and on Sober October hikes in October 2025. Relax & Restore continues that pattern on the St. Regis Mohawk Territory, using familiar community partners to make mindfulness feel practical, shared and easy to return to.
