A free one-hour mindfulness workshop at Northern Illinois University will give students, faculty and staff a short reset on Thursday, April 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center Illinois Room at 600 Lucinda Ave. in DeKalb.

The session is built for people who want something practical, not abstract. NIU says participants will step away from daily stressors and use guided reflection and mindfulness techniques aimed at resilience and self-care, with tools they can carry into personal and professional life. The format keeps the commitment low at exactly one hour, which makes it easier to fit between classes, meetings or a lunch break.

That short window is part of the appeal. Instead of asking campus community members to commit to a long course, the workshop offers a defined entry point into mindfulness for anyone curious about meditation, stress regulation or simply carving out a few minutes of intentional pause in a crowded day. The event is listed as free, another reason it functions as a low-barrier option for people who want to try the practice without spending money or time on a larger program.

The workshop also sits inside NIU’s broader wellness network. Student Wellness through Counseling and Consultation Services offers presentations, events and activities, along with online training and peer-educator opportunities. NIU Well-being describes itself as a campus-wide initiative focused on helping the community succeed, thrive and be well. The College of Health and Human Sciences says its mission is to promote health and well-being through scholarship that brings together teaching, research and service.

NIU’s Northeast Illinois Area Health Education Center adds another layer to that campus support system by promoting both student learning and community well-being. The university’s counseling services also provide comprehensive mental health support to currently enrolled students, and NIU’s Be Well resources note that college students can face significant stress while offering opportunities to find balance and support.

Mindfulness is not new ground at NIU. The course catalog includes AHCD 620, Mindfulness: Meditation Skills and Practice, which points to benefits such as decreased perceived stress, increased compassion, improved attention and listening, and clearer focused thinking. That gives Thursday’s workshop a practical frame: it is not a trend piece or a lecture, but a campus-based chance to try a skill that already has a place in NIU’s academic and wellness offerings.
