Gambonanza begins with chess, then promptly stops behaving like chess at all. The mobile hook is simple: short runs, small boards and enough randomization to make each attempt feel like a fresh puzzle, not a memorized opening drill.

That is what makes the game worth a look on phones. Instead of chasing the king, Gambonanza pushes players to capture every piece on the board through synergies, tile upgrades and a reserve system that lets pieces sit off-board until the right moment. The official pitch leans hard into the chaos, with more than 150 Gambits, boss battles and mini-games inspired by pachinko, slot machines and gachapon. It is a compact strategy game that wants to be clever first and faithful to chess second.

For traditional chess fans, that is the warning label. Gambonanza is not trying to simulate tournament play, and Paul Giovannini, the 28-year-old French solo developer behind Blukulélé Studio, has been blunt about his own background: he said he is “not a chess expert.” After finishing Sunstone War, he built Gambonanza around improvisation and roguelike structure, with Balatro-style run building in mind, because high-level chess preparation and opening theory pushed him toward a different doorway into strategy depth.

That design choice gives the game a much clearer lane than a straight chess adaptation. If you like Slay the Spire-style runs where the fun comes from making broken combinations on the fly, Gambonanza looks like it could land. If you want to study openings, grind endgames and play by orthodox rules, this is probably not your download.

The launch numbers suggest there was already real curiosity before May 1. The March 2025 reveal trailer reportedly cleared 560,000 views, the game passed 60,000 Steam wishlists by January 21, 2026, and the public playtest pulled in 50,000 demo players. At Steam Next Fest in February 2026, the demo reportedly topped 170,000 downloads, and the Steam demo page carried 78 reviews with a Very Positive 89 percent score.

Gambonanza launched globally on May 1 on Steam, iOS and Android. Steam listed it at $14.99 with a 35 percent introductory discount to $9.74, alongside 294 user reviews and a Very Positive rating at launch. That matters for mobile players because it is not being sold as a premium chess sim with a phone port on the side; it is being sold as a portable run-based strategy game first, with the mobile version handled by Ateo.

The co-publishing setup also signals how broad the push is. Stray Fawn Publishing and Sidekick Publishing reunited after working together on TerraScape, while Ateo previously worked with Sidekick on Dwarves: Glory, Death and Loot and with Stray Fawn on Dungeon Clawler. The launch also included a custom Twitch Extension with a Hand & Brain mode, a smart move for a game that wants viewers, chat and stream chaos to feed the same improv-heavy loop.

If you want a chess game, this is not the one. If you want a roguelike strategy toy that can fit into a phone session and surprise you with every run, Gambonanza makes a strong case right away.
