Accurascale Launches Newly Tooled OO Class 73/9 Locomotive Models
Accurascale announced on December 11, 2025 a newly tooled OO 4mm model of the rebuilt Wabtec GB Railfreight Class 73 9 as the latest Accurascale Exclusives release. The announcement matters because it fills a gap in ready to run contemporary UK traction, and the tooling covers the many visual and mechanical variants introduced by the 73 9 repower project.

Accurascale unveiled a newly tooled OO 4mm model of the rebuilt Class 73 9 on December 11, 2025 in a post by Fran Burke. The model arrives as part of the Accurascale Exclusives range and targets modellers who want accurate, ready to run examples of modern GBRf and Caledonian Sleeper traction. Pre orders opened direct from Accurascale with price bands indicated for DC and DCC ready versions and for factory sound fitted options, and delivery is projected for Q4 2026.
The announcement lays out planned releases for multiple GBRf examples in both early and current condition, and for Caledonian Sleeper variants. Accurascale says the tooling will support a wide set of early and later condition differences. The post includes many photographs and illustrations, a launch video link, and a numbered breakdown of planned releases with period correct features so modellers can match specific numbers and liveries to the era they run.
Technical background in the announcement explains the prototype work that produced the 73 9 fleet. The 1960s built Class 73 electro diesels were reengined with MTU 8V4000 power units as part of a Wabtec rebuild program that modernised the fleet. Major visible changes include revised bodyside cooling arrangements and roof equipment, and Accurascale says the new tooling will replicate the differing body shells, roof types, coupler configurations, snowplough fittings and venting variations found across Phase 1 GBRf examples and Phase 2 Caledonian Sleeper examples.

Practically this matters for layouts set to modern eras because ready to run OO options covering this level of prototype variety have been limited. The tooling complexity suggests Accurascale is aiming for high fidelity, which helps modellers capture the subtle differences between early repowered examples and later service condition locomotives. Expect the usual Exclusives ordering process, and verify the latest price and ordering details on the Accurascale product news page before placing a deposit. The announcement gives modellers the photos and specification detail needed to plan roster additions and to prepare layout rosters for contemporary GBRf and sleeper operations.
