Bachmann reveals painted N scale Diesel and Paxton samples for Thomas layouts

Painted samples of Bachmann’s N scale Diesel and Paxton gave Thomas & Friends modelers their clearest look yet at two of the line’s most anticipated additions. The images mattered because Bachmann has offered Thomas models in N scale only since 2020, and painted samples are the stage where finish quality and character likeness start to look like a real locomotive instead of a promise. For N scale layouts built around Sodor, this was the point where Diesel and Paxton began to look ready to join the roster.

That roster already runs deep for a line this young. Bachmann’s N scale Thomas & Friends range includes Thomas, Percy, James, Emily, Gordon, Toby, the N Scale Thomas the Tank Engine LBSC 70, and Origin James. Diesel carries product number 58798 and Paxton is 58797, a pair that slots into a roster already aimed squarely at builders who want recognizable characters and a complete Island of Sodor feel in 1:160.

The new samples also gave buyers a useful reality check on what these engines are supposed to be. Diesel is based on a British Rail Class 08 diesel-electric shunter, while Paxton is also a Class 08-type diesel character, so the challenge in N scale is not just the paint, but whether the body shape and face still read instantly as those TV characters at a smaller size. Bachmann has already offered both characters in HO scale and Large Scale, which gives collectors a useful precedent for how the N scale versions may compare once they are on hand.

Interest in the reveal was already building before the paint arrived. Bachmann forum users had been discussing unpainted samples and expecting painted versions soon, and on February 19, 2026, the painted Diesel and Paxton pair was singled out as the highlight of the stream. That kind of reaction says as much about the Thomas side of the hobby as it does about the models themselves: these are characters with a built-in audience, but N scale buyers still want crisp decoration and a convincing profile.

Pricing and preorder status now make the samples feel even closer to the layout. TrainWorld lists Bachmann N scale Diesel and Paxton as preorder items at $129.99 each, while Bachmann’s own store lists Diesel [58798] as coming soon in N 1:160. With the paint on display, the remaining question is no longer whether these engines are coming to N scale, but how neatly they will slide into existing Thomas-themed consists, yards, and Sodor scenes.
