Circus-Themed HO Model Train Display Debuts at Woodlands Museum
A traveling, circus-themed HO-scale model train layout created and supplied by the All Points North Model Railroad Association opens today at the Woodlands Children’s Museum and runs through January 9. The animated exhibit, complete with a big-top tent, a moving parade, Ferris wheel, carousel and roller coaster, is included with museum admission and offers families a lively, hands-on introduction to model railroading.

The Woodlands Children’s Museum opens a colorful, traveling model train installation today that blends classic circus spectacle with intricate HO-scale modeling. Created and supplied by the All Points North Model Railroad Association (APN), the display runs January 6–9 and is included with museum admission, which is $9 for adults and for children age 1 and up.
At the center of the layout is an animated big-top tent surrounded by hundreds of miniature figures and multiple moving features designed to engage children and families. Trains run through a carnival scene that includes a moving parade, a Ferris wheel, a carousel and even a miniature roller coaster, giving visitors a range of visual surprises and mechanical action to watch up close. The HO scale makes it detailed enough for collectors to admire while remaining accessible for young visitors who respond to motion and color.
The APN’s traveling, mobile exhibit brings the craftsmanship of club modeling to a public, family-oriented setting. For hobbyists, the display provides practical inspiration, demonstrating how animation, scenic work and synchronized movement can bring a compact HO layout to life. For families and teachers, the exhibit offers an engaging way to introduce children to basic engineering concepts, storytelling through scenery, and the patience and precision of model railroading.
The museum is framing the installation with programming for younger audiences. On January 9 the venue presents a Storybook Theatre featuring Circus Train, pairing a read-aloud experience with the visual backdrop of the layout. That program is timed to coincide with the final day of the installation and aims to deepen the connection between narrative play and the miniature world on display.
Visitors can see the layout during the museum’s regular hours through January 9. Admission covers both the museum and the APN exhibit, making it an affordable outing for families and a convenient chance for newer modelers to study animation techniques in person.
