E501 series returns to Ueno for Tomix 50th anniversary event
An original-color E501 rolled into Ueno for the first time in nearly 19 years, anchoring Tomix’s 50th anniversary platform event with an N-gauge first.

The real headline at Ueno was not just Tomix’s anniversary, but the sight of an original-color E501 series entering the station for the first time in nearly 19 years. JR East’s K704 formation from Katsuta Vehicle Center stood at Ueno Station 13th platform, PLATFORM13, with a special “Tomix 50th Anniversary” headboard on the Tokyo-end leading car, turning a commuter EMU into the centerpiece of a packed model-rail crossover.
Tomix’s 50th anniversary collaboration, titled “,” ran May 5-6, 2026 at Ueno Station’s PLATFORM13 and marked 50 years since the Tomix brand was born in September 1976. Tomix also said this was the first time in its 50-year history that an N-gauge exhibit operated on a working station platform, a detail that gave the setup unusual weight even by Japanese event standards. The main event tickets were sold through JRE MALL and had already sold out, while the sales area in the Ueno Station grand concourse remained open to the public without admission.

Inside the train, the display was built like a moving archive. The full car interior included a Tomix Advertising Museum with past catalogs, diorama photos, and advertisements, along with booths from companies such as VICOM. Tomix also set up photography corners with layouts recreating Ueno Station and Ogu Vehicle Center, giving visitors a direct link between the platform scene and the layouts many modelers try to compress into home-sized footprints. RM MODELS was among the model-rail names exhibiting on site, adding to the sense that this was being treated as a milestone, not just a product promotion.

The E501 itself carries its own fan appeal. Introduced in 1995 as JR East’s AC/DC commuter EMU for the Joban Line, it is now a rare presence in original color, and RailLab lists just eight formations in total, with K751 retired and K701, K702, K703, K704, K752, K753, and K754 still on the books. To deepen the celebration, a special charter, E501 , ran from Katsuta at 0:05 on May 5 and reached Ueno around 4:00, with participation plans ranging from single-seat sleeping and two-seat riding to recording and a Toride Station stopover. For fans, the draw was simple: a rare E501 return, a platform-side Tomix showcase, and a real station scene that felt built for the camera and the display case at the same time.
