Footplate and Dapol have given 16mm narrow-gauge modellers something that could change how quickly a credible garden railway comes together: a ready-to-run rolling stock range built in the UK, aimed at 32mm and 45mm gauge layouts, with the first open wagons starting at £69.99.

The launch matters because it is not just another wagon announcement. The range is being developed and produced domestically, which carries real weight in narrow gauge, where continuity, finish and confidence in the supply chain often matter as much as the model itself. Footplate is also making the stock exclusive, a move that suggests this is meant to be a distinct line with room to grow rather than a one-off release.

The debut open wagons are inspired by the Rheidol, giving the range an unmistakable Welsh narrow-gauge feel without locking it to one exact prototype. That is a smart place to start for garden railway builders who want atmosphere and consistency on the line without being boxed into a single historical roster. For layouts that need a believable mixed rake quickly, that balance between inspiration and flexibility is a practical advantage.

Dapol and Footplate are not stopping there. The open wagons are set to arrive in five liveries, plain bauxite, plain grey, GWR dark grey, Colman’s Mustard and Purple Moose, each with multiple running numbers. Flat wagons are also in the works, including plain and private-owner styles such as L&M Hughes Timber Co and RED Co, Railway Extension and Demolition. That breadth points to a system designed for operating variety, not just shelf appeal.

The detailing also pushes the range toward serious use rather than novelty. The models include insulated metal wheels and axles, a turned metal centre buffer and a spring-loaded hook, all compatible with both 32mm and 45mm gauge. With tooling already at an advanced stage and the first releases scheduled for this summer, the project looks like a live production line, not an idea on paper.

For 16mm modellers, that is the real story. A known manufacturer backing the sector increases confidence that the line can deepen over time, and the planned mix of open wagons, flat wagons and future coaching stock could lower the barrier to building a complete, convincing train. In a hobby where a well-matched rake can transform a garden railway from a collection of vehicles into a working miniature railway, that is a significant shift.
