New HO and N Scale Locomotives Announced, From Atlas RS-1 to Rapido U25B

Three major HO diesel announcements dominated Mitch Horner's March 30 "News & Products" roundup on Model Railroader's news feed, collectively pointing toward where the high-end HO market is headed: prototype era accuracy, road-number-specific tooling, and a DCC+sound premium that operators need to budget for before placing pre-orders.

The clearest pricing signal came from Atlas's Master-series Alco RS-1. Atlas listed the DC-only version at $209.95 MSRP and the DCC+sound version at $329.95, a $120 gap that reflects the growing standard for factory-installed sound in premium HO releases. The RS-1 carries a die-cast metal chassis, separately applied wire grab irons, metal couplers, and a five-pole motor with dual flywheels. Five new paint schemes are on offer: Arkansas & Missouri, Black River & Western, Long Island Rail Road, Maryland & Delaware, and Spokane, Portland & Seattle, alongside new road numbers for additional Class I and regional roads and limited collectors' series versions. Estimated arrival is Q4 2026, giving roster planners time to commit, though limited collectors' editions reward early pre-orders before roadnames disappear. Dealers have already listed DC versions below $150, a meaningful gap from the $209.95 MSRP that sharpens the cost-of-ownership comparison between DC and sound-equipped buyers.

Rapido's newly tooled GE U25B represents the most structurally ambitious announcement of the three. The model spans multiple prototype configurations: high-nose and low-nose variants, single and double front windows, flat and sloped low noses, and Phase IV units representing late U25Bs and early U28Bs. Road-specific details include working frog lights on Rock Island and Maine Central versions, roadname-specific exhaust stacks, and road-specific battery box doors on the engineer's side. The pre-order window closed March 16, 2026, with anticipated delivery in February 2027, so modelers who haven't committed are now looking at secondary-market availability after the run ships.

ScaleTrains' Rivet Counter EMD SD40-2 carries the nearest delivery window of the three, with an estimated August 2026 arrival. Pricing sits at $258.99 for the DC/DCC-ready version and $388.99 with DCC and sound. The Rivet Counter designation signals ScaleTrains' highest fidelity tier: three-hose MU clusters, a detailed cab interior, corrugated radiator grilles, and road-number-specific details that differ across the lineup. Current announced configurations include Burlington Northern in late/class-lights trim, Union Pacific in 116-inch snoot-nose form, and Family Lines/L&N.

The combined picture is three HO diesels at three price points, three delivery schedules, and three manufacturers each staking a claim in the prototype-fidelity space. For modelers who want their SD40-2 fleet finished before year's end, ScaleTrains' August window is the only one that delivers in 2026.
