Roseville Model Railroad Club Opens Doors During Big Boy Steam Locomotive Visit

At 133 feet long and 1.2 million pounds, Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014, the world's largest operating steam locomotive, does not need help drawing a crowd. The Roseville Roundhouse Model Railroad Association is making the most of the resulting foot traffic anyway, opening its clubhouse at 9707 Cook Riolo Road, Building 3 in Roseville free to the public today and Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For anyone already in Roseville for the big-steam spectacle, the clubhouse functions as the companion stop that trackside viewing cannot provide. Two layouts are running simultaneously throughout both days, with club members on hand as visitors work through the partially completed miniature worlds the association maintains. Sales tables stocked with new and used model trains and equipment give serious collectors a reason to linger well past first glance.

The scale math is worth pausing on. No. 4014 stretches 133 feet from pilot to tender. That same machine modeled in Z scale at 1:220, the hobby's smallest mass-produced gauge, would measure roughly seven inches tip to tender.
