2K named Victor Wembanyama the Standard Edition cover athlete for NBA 2K27 on July 22, ending the recent run of NBA champions fronting the series. The game will also feature Caitlin Clark and Derrick Rose on other editions, and 2K said the official gameplay trailer drops July 28, with a global release set for Sept. 4.

Wembanyama’s selection fits a player who has already moved faster than the league could catch up. He became the youngest Defensive Player of the Year in NBA history and the first unanimous winner in 2025-26, a resume that makes him more than a novelty pick for a box cover. He is also the first San Antonio Spurs player to appear on the standard NBA 2K cover, and the first European player on a 2K cover since Luka Dončić in NBA 2K22.

The change also breaks a clear recent pattern. NBA 2K26 put Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on the cover after he led the Oklahoma City Thunder to the title, and that followed the kind of champion-first logic 2K has leaned into before.
