Alliance for Parrots Names March 10, 2026 as Global ParrotCrisis Awareness Day
58% of parrot species are in decline and sanctuaries are at capacity — the IAPP marked March 10 as #ParrotCrisis Awareness Day to push adoption and end the trade.

Fifty-eight percent of all parrot species are in decline, and in many areas of the world, the poaching rate for parrot chicks is 100%. Yesterday, the International Alliance for Parrots mobilized that grim reality into a coordinated global campaign, marking March 10, 2026 as #ParrotCrisis Awareness Day under the tagline "Because none are free until all are free."
The Alliance organized the day as a synchronized push across social media, blogs, list-servs, and local media, inviting parrot lovers, rescue organizations, and allied groups to download ready-made content and amplify it simultaneously. Assets available through the campaign include an Instagram carousel, an Instagram video, a blogpost template, an op-ed template, and a single Instagram/Facebook graphic. All materials except the Instagram video were made available in Spanish and French alongside English, reflecting the global scope the Alliance aimed to reach.
The numbers underpinning the campaign are stark. According to the IUCN Red List, 29% of all parrot species are listed as critically endangered, endangered, or threatened. Beyond that, 90% of birds trapped for the wildlife trade die after capture. "Despite international anti-poaching policies and frameworks around the world, parrots continue to be trafficked to meet the demands of the global pet trade," the Alliance stated in its campaign messaging. Sanctuaries worldwide are already feeling the downstream pressure: the Alliance described them as at capacity, "unable to address daily requests for surrender as more and more birds flood the market from breeders."
The Alliance also pointed to a behavioral cycle that makes the crisis self-reinforcing. Parrots are among the most frequently abandoned companion animals, the group noted, citing their tendency toward loud vocalizations, aggression, and property destruction as reasons most guardians eventually struggle. Standard hand-rearing practices used by the pet industry, which the Alliance describes as parental deprivation, "actually undermine a parrot's ability to mature into a psychologically healthy, well-adjusted adult, and increases the likelihood of a bird's failure as a 'pet'." Even devoted guardians, the Alliance added, can find themselves unable to continue care when health or financial circumstances shift.

The campaign's core directive was unambiguous: "If you love parrots, don't buy, breed, or sell them." The Alliance pushed the #AdoptDontShop framework as the primary action, paired with support for local sanctuaries. Instagram participants were asked to tag @Alliance4Parrots so the Alliance could reshare content on the day itself and invited to send engagement metrics back to the organization afterward.
In the lead-up to March 10, the Alliance held three open office hours sessions via Zoom for anyone needing guidance on content creation: February 19 at 5pm ET, February 26 at 4pm ET, and March 5 at 3pm ET. Participants who created original graphics or video were also given permission to use Alliance logos with no attribution required.
More information and resources are available at parrotalliance.org, and the Alliance continues to be active on Instagram at @Alliance4Parrots. "No cage is big enough," the campaign concluded. "Together, we can end the parrot crisis.
