Ragù Pasta has shut permanently on George Street, leaving Edinburgh diners without one of the city centre’s few dedicated fresh-pasta spots. The closure at 92 George Street ends a two-year run that had turned the former Xile Clothing unit into a 110-cover Italian dining room with a mezzanine and pasta made on site.

The restaurant told customers it was “sad” to share the news and said it was “so grateful to everyone who has supported us, worked with us and dined with us over the past two years.” It added that its lease had been sold on to a new operator, confirming that the site will now move on under different hands. Customers holding gift vouchers have been told to contact info@ragupasta.co.uk for a refund or to arrange reuse at Salerno Pizza.

For regulars, the loss is immediate and specific: no more walk-ins to George Street for the house fresh pasta that defined the concept from day one. When Ragù Pasta opened in April 2024, it arrived as the third business venture in the capital for Princes Restaurant Group, the Glasgow family firm behind Salerno Pizza in Edinburgh’s St James Quarter and The Willow Tea Rooms in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The launch pitch was clear. The menu would centre on fresh pasta made on site, with Italian pasta consultants brought in to help refine the dishes.

That opening gave the street a different kind of city-centre draw, one built around a focused pasta menu rather than a broad all-day offer. Ragù Pasta occupied a prominent George Street address, and its scale, 110 covers and a mezzanine floor, marked it out as a serious investment in the Edinburgh dining scene rather than a short-term pop-up or side project.

The company behind it, RAGU PASTA LTD, was incorporated on 14 April 2023 and registered as a private limited company with a licensed restaurants classification. Princes Restaurant Group, based in Princes Square, Glasgow, still operates Barca Tapas, Cranachan, Salerno Pizza, RAGU Pasta and Willow Tearooms across its portfolio.

Reaction has already shown how much the closure will be felt locally. One customer said they were “gutted” to see it close and hoped it might reopen elsewhere in the city. For George Street, it is another familiar dining room gone; for Edinburgh pasta fans, it is the loss of a place built around fresh pasta at the centre of the room, not as an afterthought.
