Pathfinder returns to Free RPG Day with two Paizo giveaways

Pathfinder is back in the Free RPG Day stack with two Paizo giveaways, and the easiest pickup for most tables is the Pathfinder one-shot, Things Go to Hell. The Starfinder side, Rescue on Raxil, gives groups a second reason to stop by a participating store on Saturday, June 27, but both items only matter if a local gaming shop is actually in the event.

Free RPG Day’s 2026 slate includes 40 free items across the hobby, and the official event site says the kits are sold out for retailers and limited to brick-and-mortar stores. The gamer-facing page makes the practical part even clearer: stores may hand items out free, free with purchase, or as part of in-store play. That means the smartest move is to check with your nearest specialty game store before you go, because the same Free RPG Day title can land very differently from one counter to the next.

On pure tabletop value, Things Go to Hell is the stronger grab. A Pathfinder one-shot is immediate usable content, the kind of handout that can become a session with almost no prep. Rescue on Raxil is still a real play item, and Paizo’s June Organized Play update says the Starfinder adventure would use a generic Starfinder sanctioning document published the previous month. Paizo’s Free RPG Day post also says this year’s support includes preview creatures for the Starfinder Playtest, which gives the Starfinder side an extra layer of value as both adventure and preview.

That split matters because it shows what Paizo is using Free RPG Day for in 2026. Pathfinder gets the cleanest starter-friendly table content, while Starfinder gets a bridge toward the next wave of material. Paizo’s archive shows the company also participated in 2024 and 2025, so this is not a return in name only. It is part of an ongoing habit of showing up where new players first touch a system, at the store counter and around the demo table.
