For Leica M and L39 shooters who want a 35mm lens that disappears in the hand, 7Artisans has aimed straight at the street, travel, and documentary crowd. The new M 35mm f/2.8 is built for the people who prefer a jacket-pocket kit and zone-focus simplicity over a bigger, faster optic with more glass hanging off the front. At f/2.8, it gives up some low-light reach and background separation compared with faster rangefinder primes, but it answers with size, weight, and a handling style that suits everyday carry.

7Artisans officially announced the lens on April 22, 2026, and set the launch price at $428. It is designed for Leica M cameras and Leica Thread Mount bodies, also called L39 or LTM, the old screw-mount system that predates the M-bayonet. The lens uses a 7-element, 5-group double-Gauss optical design, a 7-blade diaphragm, and a minimum focus distance of 0.7 meters. It is manual focus only, but it is fully rangefinder-coupled, which keeps it firmly in the traditional Leica shooting workflow on compatible bodies.

The numbers tell the story of the appeal. The barrel is just 20mm thick, the lens weighs 88 grams, and the filter thread measures 34mm. That makes it far closer to the idea of a camera companion than a full-size modern prime. Official listings say it also includes a removable M-mount piece for L39/LTM use, plus a custom circular hood and an ultra-thin filter. Retailer listings at Amazon and B&H Photo also position it as a compact wide-angle prime for M and L39 mount rangefinder cameras.

Stylistically, 7Artisans leans hard into the language of classic Leica glass. The look recalls the Elmar family and even echoes the Summaron 35mm f/2.8, a lens that came in both screw-mount and M-bayonet versions. That vintage cue is more than cosmetic for many rangefinder shooters, who still gravitate toward lenses that feel tactile, compact, and mechanically direct. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Shenzhen, China, 7Artisans is clearly pushing further into legacy rangefinder territory with a lens that is less about spec-sheet theatrics and more about keeping the old Leica rhythm alive in a cheaper, smaller package.
