Nikon Issues Quality Alert for Z6 III, Z5 II, and ZR Cameras
A manufacturing defect in certain Z6 III, Z5 II, and ZR units can render cameras inoperable; Nikon is offering free repairs with prepaid shipping starting March 23.

Nikon posted a Technical Service Advisory on March 17 confirming that certain Z6 III and Z5 II mirrorless cameras and ZR cinema cameras were assembled using components that "do not meet our quality standards," a defect serious enough to render affected units completely inoperable.
"We have confirmed a manufacturing issue with certain Z6 III, Z5 II, and ZR cameras, which may cause the cameras to become inoperable. We have identified a range of serial numbers for the affected products, and Nikon will provide repairs free of charge regardless of the warranty period, including shipping. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers," the advisory reads.
The company has identified the specific serial-number ranges tied to the problem, which means only a subset of cameras in circulation are involved rather than every unit sold. As Andy Stout noted in his RedSharkNews coverage, "a faulty batch of cameras is not ideal but a long way from the total carnage that can be a full product recall." Nikon is not publishing those ranges publicly; owners have to run their own serial number through the lookup tool on the advisory page at nikonusa.com/service-advisories/z-tsa-3-2026.
Finding that number takes about ten seconds: open the camera's monitor, and a seven-digit code is printed on a label inside the hinge area. Enter it into Nikon's tool, and if the camera is flagged as affected, the site provides instructions for submitting a repair request along with a prepaid return label covering round-trip shipping. Nikon will replace the necessary parts at no cost, even for cameras whose warranties have already expired.

Repair submissions open March 23, 2026. Owners with questions before or during that process can reach Nikon Customer Relations by phone at 1-800-645-6687 (1-800-Nikon US), available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
This is not the first time Nikon has moved quickly on a manufacturing-related service advisory. In 2023, the company issued a similar program after discovering that some Z8 bodies were not accepting lenses correctly, and separately flagged a strap lug issue on the same model that year. In 2022, a Z9 advisory addressed lens release buttons that were failing to function correctly. In both cases, Nikon covered repairs and shipping for out-of-warranty cameras, matching the terms of the current program.
For Z6 III, Z5 II, and ZR owners, the advisory page is the first stop. The six-day gap between the advisory's publication and the March 23 intake date gives owners time to locate their serial number and confirm eligibility before sending anything in.
