Sony disclosed a coordinated wave of firmware updates across its Cinema Line and Alpha families, naming VENICE 2 V4.1, BURANO V3.0, FX6 V6.0, FR7 V4.0 and a7S III V5.0 and tying new features to production and virtual-production workflows. The company presented the updates at BSC Expo 2026 in London and through its European press channels in mid-February 2026.

VENICE 2 V4.1 is scheduled for February 2026 and focuses on metadata and rigging workflow improvements. CineD reported that V4.1 “adds moiré alert maximum level recording in metadata,” a field meant to help post teams working with LED walls and fine patterns, and that V4.1 includes “Horizontal adjustment value storage for the VENICE Extension System Mini.” Newsshooter additionally published a VENICE roadmap showing V5.0 in 2026 and V6.0 in 2027.

Sony’s compact sensor-head work for VENICE drew attention at the Expo. SonyAddict described a “VENICE 2 Mini” weighing “550 g,” calling it a “compact sensor head for tight spaces” that “removes the internal ND wheel, requiring manual filter swaps, but retains 8K sensor compatibility and 12 m cable runs.” SonyAddict also noted VENICE 2 integrates “Ed Lachman’s EL Zone System, mapping exposure in stops relative to 18% gray.”

BURANO V3.0, previewed at BSC Expo and expected in May 2026 per Newsshooter, adds anamorphic and high-speed capabilities. SonyAddict listed three headline items for BURANO V3.0: “Anamorphic Expansion: Adds 6:5 de‑squeeze for 2x anamorphic lenses,” “Unlocked Full‑Frame High Speed: Enables 4K up to 120fps in full‑frame mode,” and “Infrared Pollution Fix: New OLPF corrects IR color shifts; existing owners can request replacement.” Newsshooter also described a broader “imager scan mode” set of additions for documentary, sports and live formats.

The prosumer FX6 gets a VENICE-style interface and a new codec. FX6 V6.0, expected March 2026, ported the VENICE/BURANO “Big Six” quick-access menu to FX6; Newsshooter enumerated the BIG6 elements as “FPS, ISO, Shutter, Iris or ND Filter, Look, and White Balance.” Multiple outlets confirmed FX6 V6.0 will add Blackmagic RAW recording, described as “a highly requested feature arriving in March 2026.”

FR7 V4.0, expected from February 2026, brings virtual-production and tracking updates. Newsshooter reported FR7 V4.0 will include “Support for OpenTrackIO – the new standard for Virtual Production camera tracking, designed by SMPTE RIS OSVP group.” SonyAddict’s roundup also mentioned AI tracking features for FR7 in its coverage.

Sony’s Alpha side is represented by a7S III V5.0, listed across trade summaries with the addition of content-authenticity functionality; DailyCameraNews summarized that the update adds “authenticity tools on the a7S III” though technical details and timing were not provided in the excerpts.

Beyond camera firmware, CineD noted Sony showcased connected-production kit at BSC Expo including Ci Media Cloud, the PDT-FP1 portable data transmitter, a dedicated podcast studio and a camera-tracking system variously spelled “OCELLUS” and “Oscelus” in trade reports. CineD summarized the broader strategic picture: “The firmware updates announced at BSC Expo reinforce Sony’s strategy of extending camera capabilities through software rather than hardware replacement.” With month-level rollouts already posted for several models and a VENICE roadmap into 2027, Sony is signaling continued software-driven feature investments for current owners.
