Spiva Center Celebrates 50 Years of PhotoSpiva with Dan Winters Reviews
PhotoSpiva turns 50 with Dan Winters jurying 84 works from 47 artists, plus rare 15-minute portfolio reviews today for $25 a session.

PhotoSpiva marks its 50th anniversary this year with an opening reception tonight at the Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin, Missouri, where nationally renowned photographer Dan Winters has curated 84 works from 47 artists drawn from a competition that pulled submissions across all fifty states.
Established in 1977, PhotoSpiva stands as the longest-running competition of its kind in the United States. This year's juried selections will hang in Spiva's galleries at the Harry M. Cornell Arts & Entertainment Complex from March 14 through May 2. Tonight's opening reception runs 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and is free for Spiva members and exhibiting artists.
The rarest opportunity in this year's programming falls on Saturday, March 14, when Winters will conduct a limited number of private portfolio reviews. Zoom sessions run from 10:00 a.m. to noon; in-person sessions follow from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. Each session is 15 minutes and costs $25, with Spiva members paying $15. The Juror Talk and awards presentation will take place in the Freeman Health System Main Gallery, with a $10 suggested donation. First place carries a $1,000 prize, second place $750, third $500, and three Merit Awards of $150 each round out the prize structure.
Running concurrently through April 24 is the 2026 Jo Mueller Small Works Auction, exclusive to the Four States Photography Enthusiasts Club. This year's juried regional exhibition features 13 photographers alongside work by curator Janice Myers, with the annual exhibit designed to showcase photography from the Joplin region at its strongest.

PhotoSpiva is open to any amateur or professional photographer in the United States or its territories, accepting two-dimensional work from any photographic process, whether traditional, digital, or photo-based mixed media, provided the work is original and has never been shown at the George A. Spiva Center for the Arts. Three-dimensional work is not eligible.
The season extends into late March with Spiva in Bloom: An Exhibition in Flowers, presented by Sharon and Lance Beshore, running March 26 through 28 with an opening reception the evening of March 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Signature programs accompanying the PhotoSpiva season also include PhotoSpiva Kids and the 1000 Words Poetry Event. More about the competition's history and Dan Winters' work is available at photospiva.org.
