Tilta launches Nucleus AF Adapter enabling Sony phase-detect autofocus on PL lenses
Tilta has launched an adapter that brings Sony phase-detect autofocus to PL cinema lenses by translating camera AF data into motor-driven focus for Nucleus-M II and Nano II systems.

Tilta has introduced the Nucleus Auto Focus Adapter (E-mount to PL), a device that lets compatible Sony cameras drive phase-detect autofocus on manual PL cinema lenses. The adapter translates the camera’s AF data into motor-driven focus movements, integrating directly with Tilta’s Nucleus-M II and Nano II follow focus ecosystems.
The immediate impact is practical: cinematographers who prefer PL glass now have a path to use Sony’s phase-detect AF performance without changing lenses. The adapter converts the electronic AF signals from E-mount Sony bodies into commands for lens motors, effectively adding autofocus capability to lenses that were designed to be pulled by hand. That alters a familiar workflow, especially for solo operators, documentary shooters, wedding videographers, and small crews who balance cinematic optics with single-operator efficiency.
Integration with Nucleus-M II and Nano II means the adapter slots into an established motor and wireless-control platform. Camera assistants and focus pullers who already use Tilta motors will find the adapter fits into existing rigs and workflows, while operators building compact packages for gimbal, handheld, or shoulder setups can add AF functionality without requiring new lens plate or mount investments.
Technically, the Nucleus Auto Focus Adapter is E-mount to PL, so it connects Sony bodies that use phase-detect AF to PL lenses that remain mechanically manual. The adapter’s role is to read the camera’s AF decisions and drive a motorized focus mechanism, bridging the electronic AF system and the geared focus rings on cinema glass. For rental houses and production departments, the adapter creates a new tool for hybrid shoots where lens character matters but speed or repeatability of autofocus can improve coverage and reduce takes.
Practical considerations remain important. Verify camera compatibility with phase-detect AF modes and plan for calibration between lens focus gearing and motor response. Expect setup time for assigning gear, tuning motor speed and backlash, and confirming focus accuracy in the kinds of shots where AF will be relied upon. Operators who depend on repeatable marks and precise manual pulls will still value traditional pulling techniques, while those who need assistive AF for tracking or quick reframing can use the adapter as a time-saver.
Tilta’s new adapter narrows the gap between cine glass and modern autofocus systems, offering a tangible upgrade to workflow flexibility. For filmmakers and camera departments weighing speed against lens choice, the adapter provides a practical route to keep favorite PL lenses in the kit while tapping Sony’s phase-detect autofocus advantages.
