Self-Taught Boatbuilder Dan Lee Named Hull Specialist for Apache 555 Campaign

Two months. One of the most historically significant hulls in British offshore racing. A man who has never worked on a boat quite like this one.

That is the situation Dan Lee walked into when Peter Bonham Christie's Apache team confirmed him as Hull Specialist for the Apache 555 restoration and race campaign, with a full 2026 UKOPRA season opening at Southampton in May now driving the clock.

The boat itself frames the stakes. Apache 555 is a Don Shead design that won a world championship and spent nearly three decades in a museum before returning to active preparation. It is a 57-year-old wooden offshore hull, and getting it to race fitness under time pressure is the assignment Lee has taken on.

Lee did not arrive through any conventional channel. He taught himself to build boats, starting with model hulls at around age eight and progressing to full-size builds by seventeen. Various careers followed before, in 2022 at age 35, he committed fully to the craft, establishing Dan Lee Boatbuilding from a farm workshop in the Cotswolds. What began in that agricultural outpost became, by any measure, a serious professional operation: Lee turned it into one of the most-watched boatbuilding operations on the internet, secured a position as the UK's first OEM partner for Ilmor Marine Engines, and had his work appear in the advertising pages of both Epifanes and WEST System at the same time.

That last detail carries weight in the wooden boat and composite worlds. Epifanes and WEST System represent distinct finishing and laminating philosophies, and earning simultaneous placement in both suggests a breadth of recognized craft that goes beyond niche specialization.

The project will be documented in two parallel streams. The official Apache 555 channels will cover the development programme broadly, while Dan Lee Boatbuilding's platforms will go deep on the technical side: the engineering decisions, the processes, and the principles behind returning a 57-year-old wooden offshore hull to race fitness under time pressure. For a builder who built his reputation by showing the work openly, that structure is a natural extension of how he already operates.

What the restoration requires in specific structural terms has not yet been detailed publicly. The scope of planking work, any framing repairs, and the drivetrain status of Apache 555 remain to be disclosed as the project progresses. What is confirmed is the timeline: Southampton in May, and a full UKOPRA campaign after that. For a self-taught builder from a Cotswolds farm workshop, it may be the most demanding project of his career.
