Canyonlands closes Grand View Point on weekdays through October 1

Grand View Point in Canyonlands National Park’s Island in the Sky district will be closed from 6 a.m. Mondays through 4 p.m. Thursdays from July 27 through Oct. 1, turning one of the park’s signature pullouts and short-walk stops into a weekday-only no-go. The rest of Island in the Sky will still work, so the scenic drive and other overlooks remain on the table for anyone reshuffling a Moab day trip.

The closure is part of Phase Three of an ongoing project at the Grand View Point parking lot. The work is part of a multi-year construction effort aimed at better vehicle and pedestrian safety. A May 27 notice also laid out the same weekday schedule, with weekends left open.

If Grand View Point is the stop you built the day around, move it to a weekend or put it at the end of a Thursday afternoon visit after 4 p.m. If you are coming in from US 191 or rolling out of Moab, check the park’s latest information before you leave town so you do not get pinned to a closed lot on the mesa top.

For a same-day replacement, Island in the Sky has the pieces to keep the itinerary intact. Mesa Arch covers the short-walk, high-payoff slot; Buck Canyon Overlook gives you another rim-edge pullout with wide-open Colorado Plateau views; and Green River Overlook is the obvious sunset swap when Grand View Point is off the board. Upheaval Dome can also fill part of a half-day loop if you want one more stop before heading back toward Moab.
