Fayetteville tiny cottage village for veterans set to break ground

Fayetteville’s Inasmuch Village will break ground Aug. 19 in the 600 block of Hillsboro Street, turning a three-year effort into a 16-cottage community for homeless veterans. First residents are expected to move into the cottages in 2027, a timeline that puts the project on a clear path from planning to housing.

Fayetteville Area Operation Inasmuch announced the development of Inasmuch Village as a permanent housing site, and the project has since been described as serving not only veterans but also low-income residents and people with disabilities. That broader scope gives the village a wider footprint than a single-issue housing response, while still keeping veterans at the center of the design.

Operation Inasmuch’s work already includes breakfast, transitional housing and permanent supportive housing for veterans, so Inasmuch Village extends an established service model into a more durable form of housing. The nonprofit’s name is attached to the village itself, underscoring that the cottages are part of a long-running community effort rather than a one-off pilot.

The project’s scale is small by apartment-complex standards, but that is part of the appeal. Sixteen separate cottages can be easier to site and operate than a larger building, while still creating enough density to support services and a shared neighborhood feel. In Fayetteville, that balance appears to be the point: private units, a defined campus and a housing outcome that moves people out of homelessness and into permanent shelter.

The timeline also shows why tiny-cottage villages keep drawing attention from local governments and nonprofits. A project publicly advancing in 2025, announced in June 2026, and now headed for an August groundbreaking demonstrates how these developments can move from concept to construction when a site, a sponsor and a housing need line up. Inasmuch Village’s progression suggests the model can be replicated, at least on a modest scale, for communities looking to create new housing faster than traditional multifamily development often allows.

For Fayetteville, the payoff is now concrete: 16 cottages, a named site downtown, a set groundbreaking date and a move-in window in 2027. What began as a three-year planning effort is about to become a visible village on Hillsboro Street.
