Minecraft finally adds sitting after 17 years of player requests

Minecraft finally has a real sit-down mechanic, and Mojang built it into Preview 26.40.30 with something as plain as a Cushion. The item can be placed in the world and used to sit, comes in 16 colors, and is crafted from 3 Wool Slabs of the same color.

Producer Gustav Höglund walked through the change in a new video, pointing out that players have always hacked together fake seating with boats, minecarts, or even riding animals. That was never the same thing as a proper built-in option, and that is exactly why this lands differently from a throwaway novelty. Sitting will not alter survival balance or redstone, but it gives builders, role-play servers, screenshot makers, and anyone trying to make a base feel lived-in a small but noticeable piece of polish.

The preview text adds the kind of practical detail Minecraft players immediately test for. Cushions can be placed on any flat surface, they do not have collision, and they break if the block underneath them is removed. That makes them feel less like furniture and more like a lightweight world object, which is fitting for a game that has spent years letting players turn almost anything into a set piece. The same preview also adds a Straw Bed, crafted from 3 Hay Bales, that lets players sleep through the night without resetting spawn, then disappears after use.

The timing fits Mojang’s newer game-drop cadence, where smaller updates arrive several times a year instead of one giant annual overhaul. Minecraft’s official timeline already lists Chaos Cubed in June 2026 and Tiny Takeover in March 2026, with Mounts of Mayhem, The Copper Age, Chase the Skies, and Spring to Life filling out the recent run of drops. Anna Lundgren said in a March 26 interview that the format began a little over two years ago and that Mojang does not want to rule anything out for future drops, which helps explain how a feature players had mocked for years could suddenly become real.

The reaction inside the community has already moved past the joke and into implementation. A Minecraft Feedback thread posted on July 7, 2026, picked apart the Cushion and Seat idea from a technical angle, noting that a cushion behaves like an entity rather than a block, which makes it awkward with pistons and slime blocks. That same thread pushed the idea of a craftable Seat block for flying machines and other contraptions. Seventeen years after players started improvising chairs out of boats and minecarts, Mojang has finally made sitting feel native to Minecraft instead of something built from spare parts.
