Onimusha: Way of the Sword Enters Final Development Stages, Launches in 2026
Capcom director Satoru Nihei confirmed Onimusha: Way of the Sword is in its final development stages, reviving a franchise dormant for over a decade.

After more than ten years without a new entry, Onimusha is almost back. Director Satoru Nihei confirmed in a weekly memo shared on X that the team behind Onimusha: Way of the Sword has entered the final stages of development, with a 2026 release still on track for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
Nihei's memo came on the heels of a Capcom Spotlight event that showed off a gameplay overview trailer and generated a wave of community enthusiasm. "Thank you all so much for all the positive comments you've shared for last week's Capcom Spotlight," Nihei wrote. "We're glad to see so many of you say you can't wait to know when the game will be released! The whole team is now working on the final stages of development. Please look forward to our next announcement!"
No specific release date was announced at the Capcom Spotlight, and Nihei's memo didn't change that. Capcom has only committed to 2026 as the launch window.
The Capcom Spotlight footage gave the clearest look yet at how the combat is shaping up. The Oni Gauntlet remains the mechanical centerpiece, letting players absorb enemy souls mid-battle to restore health and trigger special moves. The showcase highlighted one-on-one duels, counterattacks, and environmental interactions that layer into encounters in ways that should keep fights from feeling routine. The team is targeting a main story around 20 hours, though Nihei has been upfront that figure isn't finalized.

One of the newly introduced areas is the Underground Laboratory, a facility situated beneath Kyoto. That location has a specific villain attached to it: an enemy named Dokyo, who is reportedly creating new Genma, the demonic creatures that serve as the game's primary antagonists throughout. The setting draws from Edo-period Japan, with Capcom leaning hard into the atmospheric contrast between feudal architecture and the supernatural horror of the Genma threat.
The series' return has been a long time coming. Onimusha last saw a mainline release more than a decade ago, and the Capcom Spotlight trailer earned strong early reception from players who grew up with the franchise as well as newcomers. The upcoming announcement Nihei teased will almost certainly be the one that finally puts a date on the calendar.
