Dan Abnett's HIVE gets limited special edition in Warhammer stores

Dan Abnett’s HIVE is the real draw in this Sunday Preview, and the reason is simple: Warhammer stores are getting a limited special edition on 30 May 2026, with stock spread thin across the United Kingdom, Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. This is not a casual shelf release. It is a collector’s object, built to be hunted down.

The special edition comes in a decorative slipcase and bundles both volumes of the novel together. Warhammer Community has said it will feature unique cover art, blood-red page edges, and red ribbon bookmarks, the kind of physical flourishes that turn a Black Library release into something people plan around rather than stumble across. The book had already been announced for pre-order on 18 April, then delayed, so this late-May date is the revised target for readers who have been waiting for Abnett’s latest return to 40k fiction.

That return matters because HIVE is not just another Imperial city story. The novel is set in Sacramentus, where the planetary governor has fallen amid scandal and treachery, the city is choked by Imperial austerity, and the Adeptus Arbites enforce the Lex Imperialis while whispers of rebellion spread below the spires. Warhammer Community has framed it as a dark and brutal look at the inner turmoil of an Imperial hive city, which makes the special edition feel especially well judged for a story built on decay, pressure, and political rot.

The preview is broader than one book, though. Warhammer TV is launching Aeronautica Imperialis, a three-part animated series that shifts the lens away from infantry and armor and into the skies above a frozen world. The show pits Imperial Navy pilots against Aeldari from Craftworld Saim-Hann, with Kae flying for the Imperium and Idranith representing the Nightwing wing of the Eldar side. The first episode is due in May 2026, and the premise gives 40k animation a cleaner air-combat angle than the franchise usually gets.

Elsewhere in the package, Battle Report is set to host its first game of the new edition of Warhammer 40,000, keeping the Armageddon launch cycle visible, while Black Library Book Club turns to Ghazghkull Thraka: The Prophet of the Waaagh! and Brainboyz continues its trivia run with an Armageddon edge. Genestealer Cults is next in the Faction Focus sequence, with Necrons following at the end of the week. But the headline remains the same: HIVE is the release worth planning around, and the special edition’s limited run gives Abnett’s hive-city thriller the kind of launch that feels immediately collectible.
