Red Terror Returns to 40k, Goonhammer Sizes Up Tyranid Value Beast
The Red Terror lands at 130 points and a Saturday preorder, and Goonhammer sees a real Tyranid harassment piece, not just a nostalgia grab.

The Red Terror is back on the 40k table with rules that make the old Tyranid monster feel less like a museum piece and more like a problem. Warhammer Community paired the reveal with a full points cost, setting the model at 130 points for one model, and Goonhammer’s immediate read was that this was the kind of preview that matters to Tyranid list building, not just collectors. The model also goes up for preorder on Saturday as part of Kill Team: Terror on Devlan, where it appears in plastic for the first time after being unveiled at AdeptiCon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The new datasheet gives the Red Terror a clear battlefield job. Warhammer Community describes it as a returning Tyranid bioform and a super-Ravener, a fitting call-back to its first appearance in the 3rd edition Codex: Tyranids. Its Strength 7 scything talons put real pressure on tougher infantry, with the official rules write-up calling out Plague Marines, Einhyr Hearthguard, and Gravis-armoured Space Marines as the kind of targets it can threaten. Goonhammer’s take lands in the same place: this is a fast, nasty package that moves 10 inches, ignores walls, and has enough punch to matter into light and mid-weight infantry.

What makes the Red Terror more than a throwback is the way its damage profile and mobility work together. Its Swallow Whole style attack can turn a successful wound into Devastating Wounds and Precision, which gives Tyranid players a clean line into a key character instead of just another casualty off the front rank. That matters in a meta where small elite units and buff characters often anchor an army’s game plan. The Red Terror can also Deep Strike and then burrow back underground, which means opponents cannot simply tag it once and assume the problem is solved.

That looping threat is the real appeal. If the Red Terror is not in Engagement Range, it can slip back into Reserves, forcing opposing players to spend points and attention on screens, denial, and counter-fire. It is still fragile for a monster with no invulnerable save, and Goonhammer points to Overwatch as practical counterplay, with something like a Defiler backed by rerolls potentially dropping it outright. But the payoff is obvious in the right home. The Tyranid faction pack’s Subterranean Assault detachment gives Tyranids re-rolls of hit rolls of 1, while Burrower units can create 40mm Tunnel Markers when they arrive from Reserves. The Red Terror also carries the VANGUARD INVADER keyword, putting it in the mix for Vanguard Onslaught as well. That combination makes this release look less like a flashback and more like a very real utility threat for Tyranid commanders.
