Three women walked into some of New York City's most beloved independent jewelry boutiques on March 9 and, within a single afternoon, allegedly made off with more than $41,500 in merchandise. The NYPD has released surveillance images and is asking the public to help identify the suspects, who remain at large.

The spree began at 2 p.m. at Catbird, a popular boutique on Centre Street in Manhattan's SoHo, where two of the women "engaged the female employee in conversation to create a distraction," according to the NYPD. The third then allegedly removed around $31,000 of jewelry from an unlocked case before fleeing.

At approximately 6:10 p.m., the trio entered another Catbird store, located at 108 North 7th Street in Williamsburg, where two of them again engaged a female employee in conversation while a third removed jewelry valued at approximately $7,000 from a display case on the countertop. They fled the store on foot, traveling eastbound on North 7th Street.

At approximately 6:55 p.m., the three women entered Gorjana, located at 138 North 6th Street, just one block away. Two suspects again engaged a female employee in conversation while the third removed jewelry valued at approximately $3,500 from an unlocked display case. They fled in an unknown direction. No one was hurt during the three robberies.

The method was consistent across all three stores: two members of the crew occupied staff with questions while the third worked the unlocked display cases undisturbed. The three allegedly utilized the same tactic at each location, making off with an additional $10,500 in merchandise during the Williamsburg stops alone. Surveillance footage captured the women entering each store and browsing displays before the thefts, appearing to investigators as ordinary shoppers.

The pattern may not have ended on March 9. News 12 reported the group may have attempted another theft in Williamsburg on March 17, but a vigilant shop owner recognized the suspects and prevented the crime. A jewelry store owner near one of the Williamsburg locations also told News 12 she recognized two of the suspects from the released surveillance images.

Catbird, the boutique targeted twice in the same afternoon, has cultivated a loyal following for its delicate, ethically sourced fine jewelry. Gorjana, hit at its Williamsburg outpost, is a nationwide chain originating from California. That two of the three targeted stores were Catbird locations, hit hours apart in different boroughs, suggests the crew researched their targets with some precision.

The NYPD is searching for three people wanted in connection with a grand larceny pattern in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Anyone who recognizes the women in the released surveillance images is asked to call Crime Stoppers in Williamsburg. No arrests have been reported.
