A lone gunman walked into a jewelry store at 253 Canal St. in Manhattan's Chinatown on the evening of March 22 and left with roughly $200,000 worth of merchandise after forcing two people to the floor at gunpoint, police said.

The robbery took place at approximately 6:50 p.m. The suspect entered the store, revealed he was armed, and demanded jewelry from a 67-year-old man and a woman inside. Both were forced to the ground. The suspect seized the jewelry and fled the scene before police arrived. Neither victim was physically injured, according to the NYPD.

Canal Street has long been one of New York City's most active corridors for jewelry and gold retail, a concentrated stretch of Chinatown storefronts where independent merchants display substantial inventory at street level. The area's appeal to buyers, built on density, variety, and competitive pricing, creates a corresponding vulnerability for store owners whose high-value stock is often secured by limited means. A single robbery yielding $200,000 in jewelry represents a potentially devastating loss for the kind of small, independently operated business that defines the Canal Street retail landscape.

The NYPD released photos of the suspect and is seeking the public's assistance in identifying him. No arrests had been reported in the days following the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visiting crimestoppers.nypdonline.org, or downloading the NYPD Crime Stoppers mobile app. Tips can also be submitted by texting 274637 (CRIMES) and then entering TIP577. Spanish-speaking callers are asked to dial 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
