Baker County Commission Chair Alderson Drops Re-Election Bid, Cites Family
Shane Alderson dropped his bid for a second term as Baker County commission chair Tuesday, citing family, with the May 19 primary now less than seven weeks away.

Baker County Commission Chair Shane Alderson stepped away from his re-election bid Tuesday at the Baker County Courthouse, announcing during a regular board meeting that he would not seek a second four-year term on the three-member panel that governs the county's operations, public works, land use, and emergency management.
Alderson told those present he wants to "devote more time to his family," ending a candidacy he had formally launched in September 2025. His filing had set up what many expected would be a primary test of his record: Alderson had maintained an active candidate committee listed with the Oregon Secretary of State for Board Position 3 heading into the 2026 election cycle.
The withdrawal leaves a fully open seat with the May 19, 2026 primary now less than seven weeks out. Alderson was first elected in November 2022 and took office in January 2023, making his tenure roughly three years when the term concludes. His exit removes the incumbent's structural advantage from the contest and forces every remaining candidate in the field to recalibrate their approach.

The commission chair position carries considerable influence in Baker County. As part of the three-member board, the chair plays a central role in coordinating interagency partnerships, setting priorities for road maintenance and vegetation management, overseeing land use decisions, and guiding emergency management across a geographically expansive stretch of Eastern Oregon.
With Alderson out, the Baker County Clerk's Office will need to update candidate lists and ballot materials ahead of the primary. Candidate forums, should any be scheduled, take on added weight when no one in the race can speak from the incumbent's chair. Voters who had been preparing to weigh Alderson's record against challengers will now choose from a field in which no candidate holds the seat, with the race reset just weeks before May 19.
