Bamberg County School District says its newly elected trustees have completed the orientation required under South Carolina law, a step that puts the board on firmer footing as it heads into a busy stretch of spring meetings and end-of-year decisions.

The district’s board page says the orientation covers district policies, governance best practices and legal responsibilities. State law requires every person elected or appointed to a school district board of trustees to complete an orientation program on the powers, duties and responsibilities of a board member within one year of taking office. The South Carolina School Boards Association says its new-board orientation also covers board roles, ethics and campaign laws, and the basics of the Freedom of Information Act.

The board page identifies the current trustees as Adrienne Blume, Cindy Hurst, Jeni Bunch, Harriet Coker, Tonya Sanders-Govan, David Corder, Naomi Eckels, Gwendolyn D. Bamberg and Cathy Griffin. That matters in Bamberg County, where district decisions can affect schools in Bamberg, Denmark, Ehrhardt, Olar and Govan, and where board action can quickly ripple into staffing, calendars, facilities and consolidation-related issues.

The district’s public materials also show that the board has been active throughout the 2025-26 school year. A Sept. 17, 2025 training document lists David Corder, Naomi Eckels, Cynthia “Cindy” F. Hurst, Gwendolyn D. Bamberg, Jeni Bunch, Harriet H. Coker, Tonya A. Sanders-Govan and Cathy Ayer Griffin as present for SCSBA Basics of Boardmanship training. An Oct. 6, 2025 board minutes document also lists Adrienne C. Blume among those present.

The district homepage highlights a Special Called Virtual Meeting for May 14, 2026 at 6 p.m., and the school board archive now includes a July 2025 through June 2026 agenda-and-minutes record that lists a 5-14-26 Board Agenda for that meeting. The calendar also shows a Special Called Board Meeting on May 1 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and a Monthly Board Meeting on May 4 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., followed by end-of-second-semester and professional development items later in May.

With 1,767 students across 6 schools, the district’s governance calendar carries real weight for families and employees across the county. The board’s completed orientation, along with the posted agenda and minutes archive, gives the public a clearer view of who is making decisions and how the district is keeping that record open.
