Over 650 High Schoolers Visit Voorhees University for Tigers Preview Day

More than 650 high school students descended on the Voorhees University campus in Denmark on Monday for the university's annual High School Visitation Day, the largest recruitment event the historically Black institution holds each year.

The day's program gave prospective students a close look at campus life through guided tours and a pep rally intended to build enthusiasm for joining the Tigers. The event, marketed as Tigers Preview Day, is designed specifically to convert high school visitors into future Voorhees enrollees.

Voorhees, founded in 1897 by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright and affiliated with the Episcopal Church and the United Negro College Fund, draws students to its rural Bamberg County campus with a liberal arts curriculum and professional degree programs. The university currently enrolls approximately 500 undergraduate students, meaning Monday's crowd of more than 650 visiting high schoolers outnumbered the entire existing student body.

That scale reflects the ambition behind the event. The university's Office of Admissions organizes High School Visitation Day to give prospective students direct access to admissions staff, current students, and faculty, offering a ground-level view of what life at Voorhees looks like before any enrollment decision is made.

For a university working to grow its enrollment in a competitive landscape for small HBCUs, drawing more than 650 students to a single recruitment day represents a significant pipeline of interest. Whether that interest translates into applications and, ultimately, into enrolled Tigers will be the measure of Monday's success.
