SC Works Center on Wheels brings job help to Bamberg County

Bamberg County Government said SC Works Center on Wheels was coming to the county, bringing career counseling, job referrals, testing and training closer to residents who may not be able to get to a fixed workforce office. The Lower Savannah Workforce Mobile Unit is meant to put job-search help within reach in a rural county where transportation, childcare and work schedules can keep people from using services that exist farther away.

The county highlighted the mobile unit in a Feb. 25 Facebook post, saying the service was bringing employment resources directly to Bamberg County. That matters in a place where residents in Bamberg, Denmark, Ehrhardt, Olar and Govan may otherwise have to travel for the kind of one-stop help that can turn a job lead into an application, a test, or a training referral.

SC Works sits inside South Carolina’s broader workforce system, and the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce describes SC Works Online Services as a one-stop shop linking state and local workforce services and resources for jobseekers and employers. DEW says the online system is the state’s largest jobs database, and the agency says unemployment claimants must complete two weekly job searches to stay eligible, making direct help with job hunting especially relevant for people navigating the system.

The mobile unit also fits into the Lower Savannah Workforce Development area, which serves Allendale, Bamberg and Barnwell counties. SC Works says its services are delivered through centers and connection points across South Carolina, but the mobile model pushes that network further into rural communities that may not have easy access to a nearby office. SC Works Lower Savannah has also publicly pointed residents to the mobile unit at stops such as Blackville Library, showing that the service is already being used to reach people where they are.

The county’s own employment opportunities page and its human-resources recruiting also underscore the local need for clear job access. For Bamberg County residents looking for first-time work, a better-paying position or a career change, the mobile unit gives them a local place to start before making a longer trip to a regional center.
