Keyshawn Jennings had already spent two years building toward a Sports Management degree at Voorhees University when his sudden death left the Denmark campus searching for words. A junior from Barnwell, the county seat of neighboring Barnwell County, Jennings was the kind of Lowcountry student the university was founded to serve: someone close to home, deep into his studies, with a career still ahead of him.

Voorhees University confirmed his passing and called on the campus community to offer prayers for his family and loved ones. Jennings was pursuing Sports Management, one of 18 undergraduate programs at the Episcopal Church-affiliated HBCU, an institution accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and ranked No. 65 among Regional Colleges South in the 2026 U.S. News and World Report edition. As a junior, he had been embedded in the rhythms of campus life for more than two full academic years.

His major placed him directly adjacent to one of the most active corners of campus life. Ms. Charlene Johnson, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, oversees a department that fields 10 varsity sports and completed its first year in the HBCU Athletic Conference of the NAIA during the 2024-2025 academic year. Students in Sports Management work across that intersection of academics and competition, and Jennings was well into that coursework when he died.

Dr. Ronnie Hopkins, the university's 10th President and CEO, leads a campus that philanthropist MacKenzie Scott chose in 2025 as the recipient of a $19 million gift, the largest donation in the university's 128-year history. That investment, which followed Scott's $4 million contribution in 2020, has strengthened the programs and infrastructure that Jennings and his classmates depended on each semester.

Formal funeral arrangements had not been announced. Those wishing to send condolences to the Voorhees community may contact Mr. Adrian West, Vice President for Student Affairs, at west@voorhees.edu or 803-780-1025. Written correspondence can be mailed to Voorhees University at 1897 Voorhees Road, Denmark, SC 29042; the main university line is 803-780-1234. Founded on April 14, 1897, by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright, Voorhees has stood at the center of Denmark for more than a century. Jennings was among those carrying that legacy forward.
