Goodwill Hawai‘i Relocates Hilo Store, Donation Center to 17 Makaʻala Street
Goodwill Hawai‘i moved its Hilo store and donation center from 266 Kanoelehua Ave. to 17 Makaʻala Street to expand retail space, parking and co-locate services for East Hawai‘i residents.

Goodwill Hawai‘i has relocated its Hilo store and donation center from 266 Kanoelehua Ave. to the organization’s Hawai‘i Island campus at 17 Makaʻala Street, a move intended to expand retail space, increase parking and centralize services for the East Hawai‘i community.
The retail and donation operations at 266 Kanoelehua Ave. were open through Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026. Goodwill Hawai‘i will hold a grand opening at the new campus at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 13, 2026. The first 100 customers in line who are age 18 or older will receive free Goodwill gift cards; festivities will include giveaways, refreshments and entertainment by KWXX’s Breakfast Lūʻau host Kat.
Katy Chen, Goodwill Hawai‘i President and Chief Executive Officer, commented on the move: “We are excited to be entering this new chapter for our Hilo store and donation center, and to be able to provide a more meaningful experience for our shoppers, donors and the entire community who have been incredibly supportive of our organization for the past 20-plus years,” said Katy Chen, Goodwill Hawai‘i President and Chief Executive Officer.
The campus was purchased in 2023 for $6.25 million and consists of four buildings that have been undergoing renovations to upgrade infrastructure and bring the buildings and parking lot up to code. Goodwill describes the Hilo relocation as the second phase of a long-term plan to consolidate its retail business and human services programs on one integrated Hawai‘i Island campus. Employment programs, adult day health services for individuals with disabilities, and an immigrant resource center moved to the campus in 2024.
Goodwill is planning a final-phase build: an all-new 12,000-square-foot, air-conditioned retail store and processing center expected to be completed by 2027. The campus will also house a recycling center offering textile recycling and secure document shredding services, allowing shoppers and donors to combine errands in a single stop.

For local shoppers and donors, the immediate benefits are practical: a larger interior for shopping, more parking and a convenient donation drop-off point at 17 Makaʻala Street. For employees and clients of Goodwill’s human services programs, the consolidated campus aims to reduce travel between sites and concentrate support services closer to Hilo.
Goodwill Hawai‘i’s headquarters remain in Honolulu, but the expansion on Hawai‘i Island signals continued investment in East Hawai‘i operations. The new retail and service footprint could influence local foot traffic patterns near Makaʻala Street and shift donation flows away from the Kanoelehua corridor.

The community can expect the grand opening celebration on Feb. 13 as the next milestone in the campus transition, while construction of the final 12,000-square-foot store continues toward the 2027 target completion.
