Pōhakuloa event aims to connect Big Island firms with contracts

Pōhakuloa Training Area will host a Small Business Industry Day the afternoon of July 31, opening a federal installation that rarely offers Big Island firms a direct look at what it buys and how to compete for the work. The event is aimed at small business and industry partners and is meant to connect local companies with contracting and procurement opportunities at one of Hawaii Island’s major military sites.

For Hawaii Island businesses, the draw is straightforward: Pōhakuloa needs services, supplies, transportation, maintenance, construction support and specialized vendors. Those are the kinds of contracts that can provide steadier government revenue than one-off private jobs, especially for firms on the west side or in nearby communities that want more work staying on-island instead of leaving for outside contractors.

The opportunity is real, but so are the barriers. Government contracting can be technical, paperwork-heavy and intimidating, particularly for smaller companies that have never worked inside the federal system. An industry day can help by showing what the installation buys, how businesses can qualify, what certifications may matter and where a company might fit as a prime contractor, partner or subcontractor. For a local firm, the difference between a useful lead and a wasted afternoon often comes down to whether the event explains the specific registration and compliance steps needed to bid.

Pōhakuloa’s event also fits a broader procurement push across Hawaii. NAVFAC, Hawaii has its 4th Annual Government Procurement Industry Forum scheduled for August 5 at the Oahu Veterans Center in Honolulu, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. That forum is aimed at vendors seeking to do business with NAVFAC, Hawaii and at strengthening their knowledge of the agency’s mission and goals. NAVFAC also maintains outreach and industry-day participation through its Office of Small Business Programs, underscoring that these gatherings are a standard tool for bringing new firms into the federal vendor pool.

For Big Island companies, that makes Pōhakuloa’s industry day more than a networking stop. It is a test of whether local firms can translate one meeting into the paperwork, certifications and contacts needed to win actual government work at a secure installation with ongoing operational demands.
