Copperas Cove seniors lost more than a building when the city’s senior center shut down after a sewage backup on April 8. The closure interrupted lunch, routine, and the daily social contact many older residents rely on at 2400 Walker Place Blvd., where the city says the center serves members age 60 and older, with no city residency requirement and no annual fee.

The center is now set to reopen Monday, May 4, after a major plumbing failure forced the temporary shutdown and caused significant damage. The city said some portions of the building will remain closed until repairs are complete, while insurance and contractor work continue to move the restoration forward.

The city said a plumber determined the backup was caused by a large amount of inappropriate items being flushed, a failure that turned a routine plumbing problem into a service disruption for seniors across Copperas Cove and Coryell County. City officials also acknowledged that updates posted on the Senior Center Facebook page could have been timelier and said communication will improve going forward.

The senior center is owned by the City of Copperas Cove but managed and operated by the Hill Country Community Action Association, which continued the meals program during the closure. That kept nutrition services in place even as the building itself remained closed. The city’s website says lunch is offered Tuesday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. for $3, and meals must be signed up for the day before. The center is also open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The reopening comes only weeks after the city, Parks & Recreation, HCCAA and the Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce celebrated a grand opening and ribbon cutting at the new facility on March 16, 2026. The city’s 2026-2030 Capital Improvement Plan also lists Copperas Cove Senior Center design and construction as a project priority, underscoring how central the site has become to city senior services.

Jennifer Irvine is listed by the city as the senior center director, and the center can be reached at (254) 547-6022. For many seniors, the return of the center on Monday means more than resumed hours. It restores a place built for meals, conversation and the steady rhythm of a service many depend on every day.
