Douglas County volunteers help residents apply for SNAP benefits

Douglas County residents who have put off food assistance paperwork can get help this month from Extension Master Food Volunteers, with several July SNAP application sessions aimed at cutting through confusion, stigma and the forms that can keep eligible households from enrolling. K-State Extension Douglas County says the volunteer help is available by appointment, and the local office lists the Senior Resource Center as a regular site on the fourth Wednesday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m.

For families trying to stretch grocery dollars, the timing matters. Kansas Department for Children and Families says SNAP is called the Food Assistance program in Kansas, and the state also points families to SUN Bucks, also known as Summer EBT, for school-aged children. The current Kansas deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Aug. 31, 2026, and eligible families can receive $120 per child.

Douglas County residents also had three July SNAP help events on the calendar: July 16 at Just Food, July 21 at Trinity Episcopal Church and July 22 at Heartland Community Health Center. Those sessions, along with the regular Extension volunteer help, give residents more than one place to sit down with a person instead of trying to sort out an application alone.

The county’s food-support network does not stop at applications. Lawrence Public Schools is offering 2026 Summer Meal Kits for children ages 1 to 18, with free breakfasts and lunches available for pickup at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Open Air Pavilion on Tuesdays from June 2 through July 21. The district calendar shows July pickup dates on July 14 and July 21, giving families a second layer of help while school is out.

Residents who already use SNAP can also get more out of their benefits through Double Up Heartland, which matches SNAP dollars on fresh produce up to $25 per day. Kansas SNAP Outreach contractors Harvesters and Mirror Inc. are also listed as serving Douglas County, adding another route for residents who need help filling out Food Assistance paperwork or finding the right program for their household.
