Fire Damages Greensboro Walmart Store, Officials Say Major Loss Averted

A late evening fire on December 26 damaged the exterior and roof area of the Walmart Neighborhood Market at 3605 West Gate City Boulevard in Greensboro, city officials reported. The Greensboro Fire Department said the first call came in at 8:35 p.m. and crews brought the blaze under control by 9:50 p.m. Store personnel were evacuated and accounted for, and the interior did not catch fire although smoke affected parts of the store.

Investigators and fire crews found the blaze began outside where boxes and trash were stored, then spread to the building exterior and roofline. The department estimated content loss at about $3,000 and structural damage at approximately $15,000, bringing documented losses to roughly $18,000. Officials also stated their response prevented about $2.85 million in potential damage. By that measure the reported losses amounted to about 0.6 percent of the value officials say was averted.
