Missouri motorcyclist dies in fatal U.S. 301 crash in Hernando County
An SUV pulled from a private driveway and turned left into a northbound motorcycle on U.S. 301, killing a 49-year-old Missouri rider near Knoxville Drive.

A left turn out of a private driveway on U.S. 301 turned deadly in Hernando County, a reminder for drivers to watch for motorcycles near Knoxville Drive and other access points along the corridor. The crash killed a 49-year-old man from Missouri and sent the SUV driver to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Florida Highway Patrol said the man was riding a Honda motorcycle northbound about 5:20 p.m. Monday, May 18, when a Nissan Murano driven by a 22-year-old woman from Webster, Florida, exited the driveway and turned left into his path near Knoxville Drive. The two vehicles collided, and the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SUV driver was injured but survived. Troopers had not released the names of either person while the investigation continued.
Florida crash reports can take up to 10 days to become available, and reports containing personal information are restricted under state law to eligible parties. That delay can leave only the most basic facts public immediately after a fatal wreck, even as investigators continue piecing together the sequence of events.
The crash fits a wider safety problem that keeps motorcycles vulnerable on Florida roads. Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles says the state recorded 702,162 total crashes in 2024, including 2,962 fatal crashes and 701 motorcycle fatalities. National data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety show why left turns are such a threat to riders: crashes in which another vehicle turned left in front of an oncoming motorcycle were the most frequent type of fatal two-vehicle motorcycle crash, at 26%.
For Hernando County drivers, the practical warning is clear. U.S. 301 carries fast-moving traffic, private driveways and side-street movements that can force split-second decisions. When a turning vehicle crosses the path of a motorcycle, the rider has little room to brake or evade, and the result can be fatal in an instant.
