Arcata Fire District and Arcata Police Department investigators have classified the cause of the Jan. 23 five-alarm fire in downtown Arcata as undetermined after an exhaustive review of the area of origin and multiple possible ignition sources. The agencies said the case remains open, and investigators will consider any new credible information that emerges; affected properties will be released to owners.

The blaze destroyed seven businesses and eight apartments, producing an estimated $20 million in damage. Among the storefronts lost were Dandar’s Boardgames and Books, Northtown Books, Global Village Gallery, Vanilla Sky Co., Tenth Street Studios, and Hensel’s Ace.
