A two-story, long-vacant apartment building at 833 H Street - at the corner of H and 9th streets in Eureka - was destroyed by an early morning fire that led to the structure being demolished after firefighters knocked down the blaze. Humboldt Bay Fire and responding agencies reported no civilian or firefighter injuries, but estimated structural damage at $350,000.

Humboldt Bay Fire said Battalion 8104 was the first arriving unit and found smoke coming from the multiunit residence, which was undergoing renovations. Truck 8181 and Engine E8114 arrived next; crews pulled hose lines, set up large-volume deck-mounted nozzles and initiated a fire attack. The department said it requested a second alarm and additional engines and officers responded as the fire escalated. “The entire second story was completely engulfed in flames within 2 minutes of arrival for fire department personnel,” the press release stated.

Dispatch records from the response indicated units were sent at 1:21 a.m., and mutual-aid partners joined the effort. Arcata Fire, Loleta Fire, Samoa Fire, CAL FIRE and other partner agencies assisted on scene, and City Ambulance provided a standby unit. Humboldt Bay Fire noted that “PGE gas and Electric responded to the scene to evaluate utilities.” Two coverage engines were assigned to handle medical calls and other alarms while suppression continued.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze, but post-fire inspection found the building structurally unstable. The damaged structure was subsequently demolished and cleanup operations began. Officials reported that several pieces of equipment, trailers and neighboring structures were saved because of fire suppression efforts.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause and origin of the fire. Authorities urged the public to share information. “Anyone with information regarding the cause of the fire is encouraged to call the Eureka Police Department's non-emergency line at (707) 441-4060,” officials said. Humboldt Bay Fire also issued a public safety reminder: “Humboldt Bay Fire officials reminded everyone of the importance of contacting the police when unauthorized people are seen at construction sites, especially when work is not being done.”

For neighbors and property owners in the immediate area, the loss underscores risks tied to vacant and renovating buildings, from accelerated fire growth during renovation activity to security gaps that can invite trespass. The demolition will remove an unstable hazard, but cleanup and any permit or insurance issues will affect timelines for redevelopment on the 800 block of H Street.

The investigation into cause and origin continues; residents with tips should contact the Eureka Police Department non-emergency line at (707) 441-4060. Humboldt Bay Fire and city officials will likely release further details as investigators complete their work and as permit and cleanup actions proceed.
