Fortuna Library Begins ADA Upgrade, Services Move to Rohner Park Classroom

Humboldt County announced that construction began December 5, 2025 on an Americans with Disabilities Act compliance project at the Fortuna Public Library, and core services have been temporarily relocated to a classroom at Rohner Recreation Hall in Rohner Park. The work will improve accessibility and interior finishes, funded in part by a California State Library Building Forward Infrastructure grant of about $219,000 and county matching funds approved in 2023, and is expected to finish by February 2026.

Construction on the Fortuna Public Library ADA compliance project began on December 5, 2025, prompting a temporary move of library operations to the Rohner Recreation Hall classroom at 7 Park Street in Fortuna. Humboldt County said the relocation will allow core services to continue without interruption while crews rebuild and refurbish the library at 753 14th Street.

The project scope includes rebuilding two single user all gender accessible restrooms, reconfiguring the circulation desk to improve accessibility, creating an enhanced teen section, and performing interior refurbishments such as new paint and new flooring. Funding comes in part from a California State Library Building Forward Infrastructure grant of about $219,000, alongside county matching funds approved in 2023. County officials estimate construction will be complete by February 2026, a roughly three month work window from the December start date.

At the temporary Rohner Park site, the county said patrons will have access to a curated selection of popular materials, public computers, printers and copiers, and Wi Fi. The exterior book drop at the library address will remain open 24 7 for returns. Adjusted hours at the temporary location are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. The county also provided directions for patrons to request materials and to use the Library at Your Door service for eligible Fortuna residents to help bridge access during the refurbishment.

The upgrade represents a targeted investment in accessibility that can expand library use across age groups and ability levels, and it leverages state infrastructure dollars with local commitment. For families and teens the enhanced teen section could provide safer and more welcoming space, while the rebuilt restrooms and reconfigured service desk will reduce barriers for patrons with mobility needs. Short term impacts include reduced hours and a change in location that may affect morning users and those who rely on walk in services, but the maintained book drop and delivery options aim to mitigate disruption.

Residents who need materials or assistance while the Fortuna branch is under construction can request items through the county library system and inquire about Library at Your Door eligibility to ensure continued access during the renovation.
