Fortuna Power Outage Cuts Electricity to Nearly 7,000 Customers
A piece of equipment failed during transmission line work Monday morning, knocking out power to nearly 6,800 Fortuna and Hydesville customers for roughly three hours.

A piece of equipment failed during routine transmission line work Monday morning, triggering a widespread outage that cut power to nearly 6,800 customers across Fortuna and Hydesville before crews restored service by mid-morning.
PG&E's outage tracker logged the disruption at 8:19 a.m. on March 16, showing approximately 6,844 customers without electricity. The outage map showed the affected area blanketing a large portion of Fortuna and stretching east toward Hydesville, with neighborhoods across the Eel River Valley going dark. PG&E described it as an "unplanned outage" and sent three troubleworkers to the scene to assess the damage and begin repairs.
In a text message, PG&E said the outage "occurred while crews were performing work on a transmission line when a piece of equipment experienced a problem." The utility initially offered no estimated restoration time, saying crews needed to inspect the electrical system and identify damaged sections before power could be safely restored.
A scanner report from fire personnel added a sharper edge to the morning: the Starbucks in Fortuna experienced a power surge followed by smoke inside the building. No injuries or additional damage reports were confirmed in the initial response.

Power came back relatively quickly. By 9:56 a.m., nearly all customers had regained service. By 11:06 a.m., PG&E's outage map confirmed restoration to nearly all customers in the area, though crews remained on scene continuing inspections and repairs.
The cause remained under evaluation as of the latest update, with PG&E indicating crews were still working to determine the full extent of the problem that disrupted one of the Eel River Valley's busiest weekday mornings.
