A Humboldt County man was taken at gunpoint in the Mediterranean, while two other local residents sheltered on their boats near Crete and a fourth had already dropped out after his vessel lost power. Silas Beaver was among 14 U.S. citizens taken during the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, placing four Humboldt participants at the center of a fast-moving international confrontation.

The flotilla said Israeli forces intercepted 22 vessels in international waters less than 80 nautical miles west of Crete and transferred 175 civilian participants from 21 boats to an Israeli vessel. Alongside Silas Beaver, the Humboldt participants included Sacha Marini, Greg Terry and Windfield Beaver, who is Silas Beaver’s brother. Windfield Beaver exited the mission earlier after his boat suffered engine failure.

The Global Sumud Flotilla describes itself as a civilian maritime effort aimed at breaking Israel’s blockade of Gaza and creating a sustained humanitarian corridor. Its Spring 2026 mission included more than 70 boats and over 1,000 participants from nearly every country in the world, with cargo that the group says included food, infant formula, medicine, hygiene supplies, construction tools and school supplies. The organization said the shipments were selected with Palestinian civil society and aid partners.

The flotilla’s broader campaign had already moved across the Mediterranean before the interception near Crete. The group says an earlier phase began Aug. 31, 2025, when about 20 boats sailed from Barcelona, and that it was intercepted on Oct. 1 in international waters about 120 nautical miles from Gaza. Greenpeace’s Arctic Sunrise and the rescue vessel Open Arms were also sailing with the fleet, a signal of how closely watched the voyage had become.

For Humboldt County, the episode turned a distant blockade protest into something far more immediate. The county’s name is now attached to a high-risk mission that ended with one local resident in custody and two others forced to ride out the confrontation at sea. The flotilla said two participants, Saif Abukeshek and Thiago Ávila, remained detained in Israel, underscoring that the fallout from the interception was still unfolding across the eastern Mediterranean.
