Iron River prepares to host 58th U.P. Championship Rodeo

Iron River’s 58th U.P. Championship Rodeo ran July 10-11 at the Iron County Fairgrounds, 720 W Franklin St., under the banner of the 58th Annual Upper Peninsula Championship Rodeo. The Iron County Economic Chamber Alliance says it is the only Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rodeo in Michigan, and it has long anchored the second weekend in July in Iron River.

That staying power showed in how the weekend was spread across town. Friday’s schedule opened with Queen & Princess horsemanship at 8 a.m. at the rodeo arena, then moved into Downtown Iron River with Market Days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a Friends of the Library book sale at West Iron District Library during the same hours. The mix pushed activity beyond the fairgrounds and gave businesses, volunteers and civic groups a share of the traffic that comes with one of Iron County’s biggest summer weekends.

The rodeo also remained tied to the county’s wider tourism calendar. The Iron County Lodging Association promotes the rodeo and Bass Fest together as a signature summer draw, a pairing that helps keep visitors in town for more than a single evening. In a county built around camp, hunt, fish and hike traffic, the rodeo added another reason for families and repeat visitors to book rooms, fill restaurants and stop at gas stations and convenience stores across Iron River.

Ticket pricing for the 2026 event reflected that family focus. The official ticket page said under age 5 was always free, and all children were free with a paying adult at the Saturday 1 p.m. performance. Child tickets covered ages 6-12 and adult tickets were for ages 13 and up. Prices were listed at $18/$7 from Nov. 1 through May 31, $20/$8 from June 1 through July 9, and $25/$10 from July 10 through July 11. The same ticket page said performances went on rain or shine.

With the arena, downtown events and library sale all on the same Friday schedule, the rodeo again spread activity across Iron River instead of keeping it in one place. That kind of footprint is what has kept the event central to the town’s summer rhythm for 58 years.
