Ferry Service Suspended, 65 mph Gusts Batter Island County Communities
Gusts up to 65 mph have shut down the Port Townsend-Coupeville ferry route as a Strait of Juan de Fuca Storm Warning batters Whidbey, Camano, and Fidalgo Islands.

A Storm Warning for the Strait of Juan de Fuca is driving gusts up to 65 mph across Island County today, forcing Washington State Ferries to suspend the Port Townsend-Coupeville route and leaving communities from Whidbey to Fidalgo bracing for outages and structural damage.
The hardest-hit corridor stretches between Coupeville and Oak Harbor, where the strongest winds are concentrating. Camano and Fidalgo Islands are also in the storm's path, though the central Whidbey stretch is bearing the brunt of what forecasters have categorized as a full Storm Warning condition on the strait.
The suspension of the Port Townsend-Coupeville crossing is among the most immediate and tangible disruptions for Island County residents. That route serves as a critical link between Whidbey Island and the Olympic Peninsula, and its closure strands passengers who would otherwise rely on it to reach Port Townsend, connect to Highway 101, or access services not available on the island. Travelers needing to cross today will likely face lengthy detours north through Deception Pass or south through the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry, which itself may face weather-related delays.
Residents and utilities were warned to prepare for power outages and potential property damage ahead of the worst gusts. At 60 to 65 mph, wind speeds in this range can down trees, snap utility lines, and send unsecured outdoor objects airborne, posing hazards well beyond inconvenience.

The Strait of Juan de Fuca is one of the most meteorologically volatile corridors in the Pacific Northwest, and Storm Warnings there carry serious weight. The channel's east-west orientation funnels weather systems directly into the islands, accelerating wind speeds that can arrive with little warning for those in lower terrain.
Washington State Ferries has not yet announced when the Port Townsend-Coupeville route will resume service. Conditions across the three islands are expected to remain hazardous until the storm system passes.
