Oak Harbor Artist's Painting Lands Cover of Bestselling Novel Whidbey
A 9-by-12-inch oil Katy Holley painted at Ala Spit on a gloomy day became the cover of T. Kira Madden's bestselling novel, putting an Oak Harbor artist on a national stage.

A small oil painting made at the edge of Ala Spit traveled much farther than its 9-by-12-inch canvas might suggest. Oak Harbor painter Katy Holley learned that the shoreline scene she completed in 2024 became the cover image for "Whidbey," the nationally bestselling novel by T. Kira Madden, bringing rare national attention to an artist whose practice is rooted firmly in North Whidbey's waterfront.
Holley painted the piece on stretched linen during a session at Ala Spit she estimates took eight to ten hours. The finished work captures what she described as a "gloomy day" on the Whidbey shoreline, the kind of overcast light that defines the island's coast through much of the year. The publisher purchased the rights to the image and made subtle digital adjustments before the novel went to print.
How the publisher found the painting remains a mystery to Holley herself. She described the connection as "completely out of the blue," underscoring how literary and commercial art collaborations can arrive through channels an artist may never trace. The original 9-by-12-inch painting has since sold. A larger related version, measuring 16 by 20 inches, now hangs at Camp Casey on the island's north end.
This is not the first time Holley's work has appeared on a book cover. She previously created the cover art for "Paul" by Daisy Lafarge, establishing a track record that connects her plein-air practice to wider publishing markets. She said she was "incredibly grateful" for the placement and called it "highly meaningful," particularly given how personally resonant the Whidbey shoreline is to her own artistic practice.

For Whidbey's relatively small arts community, a locally made painting reaching a national bestseller's cover is an uncommon milestone. Penn Cove Gallery in Coupeville, where Holley currently shows her work, stands to draw visitors and readers curious about the artist behind the image. Additional pieces are available through her Etsy shop, KatyLeighArtistry.
Holley said she looks forward to reading the novel and experiencing how her image functions within Madden's text. For anyone picking up a copy of "Whidbey," the cover now has a specific address: a stretch of shoreline at Ala Spit, painted on a gray day by a North Whidbey artist who had no idea where it was going.
