Island Senior Resources is bringing its annual St. Patrick's Day pancake breakfast back to the Bayview Center in Langley this Saturday, March 14, from 9 to 11 a.m., with proceeds supporting the nonprofit's Meals on Wheels program and broader senior nutrition services.

The breakfast at 14594 SR 525 will feature pancakes, sausage, fruit, and eggs, along with door prizes. Gluten-free pancakes are available. Donations are welcome at the door, though Debbie Metz, a member of ISR's nutrition department, said the primary purpose is awareness rather than fundraising. Members of the Rotary Club of Whidbey Westside and a Rotary youth program will help staff the event. Metz said 150 to 200 attendees are expected; ISR served 120 people at its last breakfast.

The stakes behind a plate of pancakes are considerable. In 2024, Island Senior Resources served more than 120,000 meals in total, with 100,269 delivered through Meals on Wheels to at least 570 clients across Whidbey and Camano Islands. ISR is the only organization delivering meals directly to doorsteps on both islands, preparing them in its own kitchens and relying on volunteers to make three-times-weekly runs to clients who are often homebound and isolated.

"Additionally, good nutrition reduces Emergency Department visits, hospitalizations, and transitions to long-term care facilities," Metz said.

Beyond calories, those deliveries carry social weight. Metz noted that many recipients benefit from the human contact the drop-offs provide as much as the food itself, and the visits can function as informal welfare checks.

Funding the operation is an ongoing challenge. Federal dollars made up 28.7% of ISR's 2024 revenue, with private contributions coming close to matching that share. State funding accounted for 12.9% and county funding for 8.9%. Programs and services consumed 81% of ISR's expenses that year, leaving little margin for shortfalls in any revenue stream.

ISR, which operates under the legal name Senior Services of Island County, has served seniors and adults with disabilities in Island County since 1972. Its St. Patrick's Day and Halloween pancake breakfasts have run continuously since 2009.

ISR's official events page lists the breakfast on March 16, which conflicts with the March 14 date reported by other sources. Anyone planning to attend should call ISR at 360-321-1600 to confirm before heading to Bayview Center.
