Hurricane Fausto’s impacts could increase for Kauai County, officials warn

Fausto strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 100 mph, and forecasters said the system was expected to approach the Hawaiian Islands next week. The National Hurricane Center said the risk of some wind and rainfall impacts was increasing, but it was still too soon to pin down exactly where Kauai would land in the storm's path or how hard it would be hit.

That was a sharper outlook than the July 20 watch, when Fausto was still being monitored as a tropical storm in the Eastern North Pacific. By July 25, forecast cone graphics had widened enough to include Maui, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai, turning a distant Pacific storm into a real planning problem for island households, boaters and weekend travelers.

On Kauai, that kind of shift changes decisions fast. Beachgoers face the risk of larger surf and dangerous shore conditions, while small-boat operators have to decide whether to stay in harbor before winds and seas build. County preparedness messages pushed residents to check and restock emergency kits with at least 14 days of food, water, medications, chargers, flashlights and generators, a reminder that even a storm that never makes landfall can still bring flash flooding, power interruptions and slick road conditions.

Transportation officials added a more concrete warning. A July 24 harbor master notice from the Hawaii Department of Transportation said Fausto was tracking toward the islands with potentially serious impacts to Kauai and warned that a closure of Nawiliwili Harbor could be necessary. For an island that depends on harbor operations for supplies and movement of goods, that raised the stakes beyond weather inconvenience.

Emergency managers across Hawaii were already shifting posture. Oahu Department of Emergency Management said tropical storm or hurricane conditions were possible on Kauai starting that night or Saturday, while Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said it was tracking Fausto and urging residents to prepare. Kauai County’s own guidance says hurricane season in the central Pacific runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, and county preparedness materials describe storms that can bring strong winds, high surf, heavy rains and tornadoes. By the time the forecast cone widened, the message was no longer about watching a storm far offshore; it was about acting before the next advisory made the threat harder to ignore.
