Kalena Park basketball and pickleball courts set for maintenance closure

Kalena Park’s basketball and pickleball courts closed July 22 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting, for maintenance tied to tree planting, and the county notice did not name a nearby replacement court for players or families in Līhue.

The County of Kauai said park maintenance crews handled the work. For residents who use the courts before work, after school, or on the weekend, the practical effect was a full-day interruption at one of Līhue’s neighborhood recreation spots.

The July 22 shutdown was not the only recent interruption. An earlier county notice posted July 10 said a portion of Kalena Park would close July 14 to 15 for scheduled maintenance, again affecting the basketball and pickleball courts. Taken together, the two notices meant the park’s court users faced at least two temporary closures in the same month.

Kalena Park is listed by the county as a 1.33-acre neighborhood park, and the facilities page shows a basketball court plus lighted basketball, tennis and pickleball courts. That matters because the park serves more than one use at a time. A short closure can displace pickup games, youth practices and casual recreation that would otherwise happen on a normal weekday evening.

The county’s parks materials say maintenance is scheduled as needed and weather permitting, language that matched both July notices. The notices gave no alternate site for basketball or pickleball, leaving users to find other public or private courts on their own. For a small park in a busy part of Līhue, that kind of gap can quickly ripple through daily routines.
